Disable xDrive: why deactivate all-wheel drive?
Our Ostwald workshop programs the xDrive control unit (VGSG) without changing the engine or gearbox control units: your BMW becomes rear-wheel drive and retains all its other functions. Two situations lead our customers to deactivate xDrive, always after system diagnostics.
4x4 warning light or xDrive fault
All-wheel drive fault message on the dashboard: diagnostics read faults and check the VGSG before any decision.
Failing transfer case
Disengaging the front axle rather than undertaking major, costly transfer case work.
Drifting and track use
Driving without engaging all four driven wheels, for drifting sessions or more permissive track use.
VGSG programming only
The xDrive system has its own control unit, the VGSG. Our program modifies its algorithms without changing the DME / DDE (engine) or EGS (gearbox) control units.
xDrive diagnostics
Reading faults, checking the VGSG and a road test, with a priced recommendation.
VGSG programming
The transfer case clutch stays open: the front axle is disengaged.
Rear-wheel drive, functions retained
Your BMW becomes rear-wheel drive and retains all its other functions.
Restoring the original state
The original programming can be restored on request.
What changes after deactivation
When carried out correctly, deactivation has no particular impact on everyday use.
- Everyday use
At high speed, the xDrive system can already deactivate all-wheel drive itself.

All-wheel drive can be disengaged as standard using a dedicated button.

BMW xDrive deactivation: diagnostics first
An all-wheel drive warning light does not always call for major work. Diagnostics read recorded faults, check the VGSG and assess the vehicle’s behaviour on the road: they establish whether the fault comes from the transfer case, a sensor or the control unit, with a priced recommendation.
When the transfer case is responsible, deactivation avoids a major expense while keeping a BMW reliable for everyday use. If you plan to retain all-wheel drive, we service the transfer case and front and rear differentials: preventive oil changes can be carried out at the same appointment as the automatic gearbox oil change. Specialising in BMW and MINI, our Ostwald workshop knows xDrive and M xDrive transmissions.

How much does xDrive deactivation cost?
Deactivation through VGSG programming costs €320 incl. VAT. Prior xDrive system diagnostics cost from €80 incl. VAT.
Is deactivation reversible?
Yes: the original VGSG programming can be restored on request. Engine and gearbox control units are never modified.
Do driver assistance systems still work?
Yes: the program respects the braking and stability control units; ABS and DSC remain active and operate as on a rear-wheel drive BMW.
Does the transfer case also need servicing?
On an active xDrive transmission, preventive transfer case and differential oil changes are recommended: they can be carried out at the same appointment as the automatic gearbox oil change.
