BMW coding in Strasbourg
BMW coding: Coding is the software stage of every retrofit: it declares the option in your BMW's control units so that it works as it would from the factory.

When does a BMW need coding?
A modern BMW only recognises what is recorded in its configuration. Whenever equipment is added, replaced or activated, the relevant control units need to know.
After a retrofit
Soft-close, reversing camera, Comfort Access, heated seats, towbar: the genuine part is fitted, then coding integrates it into iDrive and the control units. Without this step, the option remains inactive or triggers faults.
Options already fitted but inactive
Many BMW models have the hardware for a function that was not activated when ordered: coding alone is sufficient, with no parts to add. This is what the hidden options package offers, covering three activations.
After replacing a module
A new or used control unit must be coded to the vehicle to restore all its functions without dashboard faults. Without coding, a module fitted as supplied works poorly or not at all, even if it is in perfect condition.
Battery registration
A new battery is registered with the vehicle: charge management then adapts to it. Without registration, it is charged as if it were the old, worn battery, shortening its life.
Key programming
An additional or replacement key must be paired with the vehicle before it can start it.
Apple CarPlay
Full-screen CarPlay activation on compatible systems, without an additional module.
BMW coding options available
Feasibility depends on model, year and original equipment: we check it using the number plate before any appointment.

The hidden options package covers activation of 3 functions already supported by the vehicle's hardware. Indicative list, with compatibility confirmed individually.
Proper coding, checked with diagnostics
We code using professional diagnostic tools and software, and always favour genuine BMW solutions: this ensures correct electronic integration.
Compatibility checks
Using the number plate: original equipment, fitted control units, software versions and any required parts. Before you come, you know whether the option is possible and what it costs.
Reading the configuration
Reading the FA and faults before work: we start with a sound car, know exactly what changes and can restore the original configuration if necessary.
Coding the relevant control units
Declaring the option in the FA, or setting the function through FDL, in every control unit that manages it: one option often involves several modules (cabin, iDrive, instrument cluster).
Final checks
Clearing and re-reading faults, testing the function: no remaining dashboard message.
BMW coding and retrofits: two stages of the same job
A retrofit installs the genuine part (wiring loom, module, sensor); coding makes the car recognise it. The two go together: a fitted but uncoded camera does not appear in iDrive, and undeclared soft-close generates faults. All options that can be fitted later, from soft-close to Comfort Access, are detailed on our BMW options and retrofits page.
Coding is also used outside retrofits: after repairing an FRM module, when replacing a battery or control unit, or to activate a function your BMW already supports. Electronic prices are grouped in our electronics and coding prices.
Before coding, we always read the vehicle’s complete configuration and recorded faults. A car with an existing control unit fault must first be diagnosed: coding over an electronic problem does not solve it and complicates fault finding. This is also why we prefer fitting genuine BMW parts to aftermarket modules: a manufacturer-specified part can be properly declared in the FA, whereas a generic module often requires working around the configuration and leaves error messages.
Finally, coding is distinct from an ECU remap: it changes neither power nor injection mapping. For those subjects, see our BMW ECU remap page. Coding acts on equipment: comfort, lighting, assistance systems, multimedia and recognition of replacement parts. If you are unsure whether you need an option fitted or a function activated, simply describe what you want to achieve: we tell you whether your car already has the hardware, what would need adding and the cost of each solution.

Coding appointments and duration
Coding takes place at the Ostwald workshop, with the vehicle present and the battery connected to a support power supply.
Send your number plate
Via the contact form or by telephone, with the options you want: we confirm feasibility and price before the appointment. If a part is needed, it is ordered in advance to limit downtime.
Coding alone
When the hardware is fitted, the work is carried out by appointment, without prolonged downtime.
Retrofit coding
Carried out at the end of option installation, at the same appointment as parts fitting, then the option is tested with you at handover.
Voltage support
The battery is kept charged throughout coding: an interruption during writing can damage a control unit.

What is coding on a BMW?
Coding a BMW means changing the configuration stored in its control units to activate, deactivate or declare equipment. It is the essential software step after a retrofit or module replacement.
What is the difference between FA and FDL coding?
The FA is the vehicle's option list: coding it declares an option to all relevant control units. FDL coding adjusts a specific function in a single control unit.
How much does BMW coding cost?
The hidden options package (3 functions) costs from €100 incl. VAT, coding after module replacement from €120 incl. VAT and Apple CarPlay activation from €180 incl. VAT.
Does a new BMW battery need coding?
Yes: a new battery must be registered with the vehicle so that charge management adapts to it. The price is provided according to the vehicle.
Can original settings be restored after coding?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases: the configuration is read before work, and an FDL setting can be coded back. For a retrofit, returning to the original state also requires removing the added part.
Is my BMW compatible with coding?
Most recent BMW models can be coded, but available functions depend on model, year and fitted control units. Send us your number plate and the options you want: we check compatibility before the appointment.
Can a MINI be coded?
Yes: MINI models share the electronics of BMW models of the same generation and can be coded with the same tools. Available options depend on model and original equipment, as on a BMW.
Can coding damage the car?
Coding with the right tools, a battery support power supply and a configuration read beforehand presents no particular risk. We check faults before and after every job.
