Symptoms

How can I tell if the FRM module has failed?

An expensive part at a dealership, the module can be repaired. The FRM (footwell module) controls lights, windows, central locking and wipers on many BMW models. When it fails, several functions stop together, often without a clear message.

  1. Faulty lighting

Headlights stay on constantly, lights no longer come on or flash erratically.

  2. Indicators out of action

Front and / or rear indicators no longer work, without an explicit instrument cluster error message.

  3. Central locking inoperative

Locking and unlocking no longer respond; the remote appears inactive.

  4. Wipers stopped

Wipers no longer start or work intermittently.

  5. Electric windows stuck

One or more windows no longer respond to the interior controls.

  6. Failure after work

The problem appears immediately after battery disconnection, diagnostics or module coding: a typical FRM failure scenario.

Our approach

Repairing the module rather than replacing it

We use professional diagnostic equipment, tools and software. After repair, the module is fully adapted to your vehicle, with all its functions supported.

  1. Diagnostics

Reading faults and testing module communication: we check that the FRM is responsible, rather than a fuse, wiring loom or control.

  2. Module repair

The original module is restored in the workshop. You keep your part without needing a new module programmed and coded from scratch, and your vehicle's configuration is retained.

  3. Refitting, adaptation and coding

The refitted module is adapted and coded to the vehicle: lights, windows, central locking and wipers work again.

  4. Preventive update

Our technician recommends updating the FRM module before a known fault appears, or after a repair, to prevent recurrence.

BMW FRM module repair: why the footwell module fails

The FRM module stores the vehicle’s lighting and body configuration. A voltage drop, a battery disconnected without precautions or interrupted coding can corrupt this memory: the module can no longer manage the functions it controls, and several systems stop at once. The fault is electronic, rarely mechanical, which explains why module repair is sufficient in most cases.

At a dealership, the solution offered is often a new module, programmed and coded to the vehicle, at a much higher cost. Repairing the original module avoids this replacement. Before replacing a battery or starting electronic diagnostics on a BMW with an FRM, a support power supply limits the risk of failure. BMW coding after repair takes place at the workshop, and our electronic prices are detailed in electronics and coding prices.

FRM, FEM or BDC: which module for which BMW?

BMW has changed its body electronics architecture several times. On E generations (1 Series E87, 3 Series E90, X1 E84…), lights and comfort functions depend on the FRM, fitted in the footwell. On F generations such as the 1 Series F20 or 3 Series F30, these functions use the FEM module, followed by the BDC on more recent models. Symptoms are similar (lights, indicators, central locking), but the module, repair and coding differ.

That is why we always confirm the model and module version before postage: an FRM3 can be repaired without the vehicle; other versions and FEM or BDC modules require the car at the workshop. A call with the registration document to hand is enough to clarify this and avoids sending a parcel unnecessarily.

What is the FRM module on a BMW?

The FRM (footwell module) is an electronic module in the driver's footwell. It controls exterior lights, indicators, electric windows, central locking and wipers on many E-generation BMW models (1 Series E87, 3 Series E90, X1 E84…).

How can I tell if the FRM module has failed?

Several functions fail together: lights, indicators, windows, central locking. The problem often occurs after battery disconnection or coding. Diagnostics confirm the fault by testing module communication.

How much does FRM module repair cost?

FRM module repair costs from €99 incl. VAT. Fitting to the vehicle and Colissimo postage are added if required, at the prices shown on the pricing card.

Can you drive without an FRM module?

We advise against it: without a working FRM, lights and indicators do not work correctly, making the car dangerous and unfit for road use. The module can be sent on its own while the car stays at the garage.

Where is the FRM module on a BMW?

In the driver's footwell, behind the trim panel near the pedals. On the 1 Series E87, 3 Series E90 and X1 E84, it can be removed without special tools; your usual garage can do this if you send it to us.

Does the FRM module need coding after repair?

Yes: once refitted, the module is adapted and coded to the vehicle to restore lights, windows and central locking. If refitting takes place at the workshop, this step is included.

Can I send my FRM module by post?

Yes, for FRM3 modules, by Colissimo from anywhere in France. Contact us before sending: other FRM versions cannot be repaired without the vehicle.
