When to act

When should your automatic gearbox oil be changed?

ZF, fitted to many BMW models, generally recommends servicing between 80,000 and 120,000 km, or at least every 8 years. Some signs mean you should act sooner.

  1. Harsh gear changes

Abrupt or uneven shifts: worn oil maintains hydraulic pressure less effectively.

  2. Less smooth shifting

The gearbox hesitates or responds more slowly, in town and in Sport mode.

  3. Demanding use

Sports driving, towing, high engine torque or high temperatures: an earlier oil change is recommended.

  4. xDrive all-wheel drive

The transfer case and differentials constantly work under heavy loads: their oil also needs replacing.

Our method

A dynamic oil change with the Bardahl machine

A simple gravity drain replaces only some of the oil. Our workshop, a Bardahl partner centre, has a station dedicated to modern automatic transmissions; some transmission oils are sourced through the BMW network.

  1. Flushing the system

A cleaner circulates through the gearbox to loosen accumulated residue, which the station removes.

  2. Almost complete oil replacement

The ATF oil recommended for your gearbox replaces the old oil, well beyond a partial drain.

  3. New filter and filter sump

ZF filter replaced; on gearboxes with a filter sump, a new sump and genuine fasteners.

  4. Filtering used oil

The drained oil is filtered: its appearance provides information about the gearbox's internal condition.

  5. Resetting adaptations

The gearbox adaptation values are reset at the end of the work.

Vehicle downtime: 2 to 3 hours, up to 4 hours on an xDrive.

BMW gearbox oil change: BMW automatic gearbox specialist garage in Strasbourg

In an automatic gearbox, gears, hydraulic circuits and internal clutches work constantly. The oil has four roles: reducing friction, cooling the transmission, protecting clutch plates and maintaining stable hydraulic pressure, essential for clean gear changes. Over time and mileage, it loses these properties.

Specialising exclusively in BMW and MINI, our workshop has worked for several years with Bardahl equipment and solutions for automatic transmissions. Regular oil changes limit internal wear, protect the xDrive system and reduce the risk of costly gearbox failure.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our answers

How often should BMW automatic gearbox oil be changed?

ZF, fitted to many BMW models, generally recommends an oil change between 80,000 and 120,000 km, or at least every 8 years. Sports driving, towing or high engine torque justify an earlier change.

How much does a BMW automatic gearbox oil change cost?

A ZF 8HP oil change or an oil change for a 5HP or 6HP gearbox costs from €580 incl. VAT, including ZF filter, ATF oil, cleaner, flushing and adaptation reset.

BMW transmission fluid change: how does it differ from a conventional oil change?

A gravity drain replaces only some of the oil. The Bardahl station flushes the system and replaces almost all of the oil; the used oil is filtered, providing information about the gearbox's internal condition.

Should the transfer case and differential oil also be changed on a BMW xDrive?

We recommend it preventively: these components constantly work under heavy loads. The xDrive inspection package covers the automatic gearbox, transfer case, front differential and rear differential for €1,000 incl. VAT.
