BMW N47 engine problems: models and servicing
BMW N47 engine problems affect four areas on this 4-cylinder diesel fitted to many BMW and MINI models from 2007 to 2015: timing chain, bearings, intake and injectors.

The N47 engine's weak points
The N47 is an economical, torquey engine, but its age and architecture expose four components. Each has its symptoms, and a neglected fault in one often damages the others.
Timing chain
The best-known fault: the chain, on the gearbox side, stretches and its guides wear. Rattling on starting, a timing fault, then a risk of engine failure.
Big-end bearings
Impaired lubrication (long oil change intervals, pickup strainer blocked by guide residue) wears the bearings: falling oil pressure, metal particles, bottom-end noise.
Clogged intake and EGR valve
Soot from recirculated gases and oil vapour form carbon deposits: loss of power, hesitation, excessive fuel consumption, engine warning light.
Swirl flaps
In the intake manifold, they seize with carbon deposits: uneven idle and faults recorded in the control unit.
Injectors
Difficult starting, smoke, knocking when cold or increased consumption: a worn injector should be checked before it impairs combustion.
Long servicing intervals
Many N47 engines have had oil changes at 20,000 or 30,000 km. This is a common cause of chain and bearing wear.
Which BMW and MINI models have an N47 engine?
The N47 powered most of the brand's 4-cylinder diesels before the B47 arrived. The exact engine is checked from the registration document or number plate.

- B47 engine problems: what should be checked?
The B47 succeeds it from 2014–2015 on the same models. Its timing system, bearings and intake need the same approach to monitoring: the mileages below remain a useful reference.
Indicative list, with approximate years depending on version: the workshop confirms the engine before any work.
An N47 assessment before a fault becomes costly
On a high-mileage N47, or before buying a used car, engine diagnostics assess the four sensitive components and prioritise work: what is urgent and what can wait.
Timing system
Listening when cold, crankshaft / camshaft timing values, looking for guide residue in the oil. The outcome is clear: chain sound, to monitor, or to replace promptly.
Lubrication and bearings
Oil pressure, oil and pickup strainer condition, looking for metal particles: bearing wear can be detected before noise appears.
Intake, EGR and flaps
Reading faults, checking the EGR valve and swirl flaps, assessing deposits. Cleaning is only offered if the intake actually needs it.
Injectors and combustion
Injector leak-off rates and corrections, compression tests if needed, borescope. A faulty injector is replaced individually without changing the whole rail.
The assessment leads to a quote for each job: chain kit, bearings, intake cleaning or routine servicing.
BMW N47 engine problems and our diesel services
Each N47 weak point has its own detailed page. For the timing system, our BMW timing chain guide gives mileages engine by engine and the complete kit price; kits are also listed in our timing chain prices. Bottom-end wear is covered on the BMW big-end bearings page, and deposits on the diesel intake cleaning page.
Servicing remains the safest approach: a BMW servicing package with oil changes every 10,000 km protects the chain, tensioners and bearings together. On a used car with an N47, ask for timing chain and oil change invoices: their absence justifies an engine assessment before buying.
Buying a used car with an N47: the right questions
Before signing, ask the seller three questions. Has the timing system been replaced, and at what mileage? A chain kit invoice completely changes the car’s value. How often has the oil been changed? Intervals of 25,000 or 30,000 km, common at the time, encourage chain and bearing wear. Is the car mainly driven in town? Short journeys clog the intake and EGR valve faster than motorway driving.
Also listen to the engine when cold, with the bonnet open, during the first few seconds: metallic rattling that then disappears is a typical sign of a slack chain. An engine warning light, loss of power under acceleration or black smoke when accelerating again points more towards the intake or injectors. If in doubt, our assessment distinguishes the causes before you buy. It also gives you a priced basis for negotiation: the cost of a chain kit or intake cleaning to plan for is easier to establish from a quote than from an impression.

When should an N47 engine be checked?
There is no universal mileage: previous servicing matters more than the odometer. Here are our workshop's reference points.
Between 100,000 and 150,000 km
Closer timing chain monitoring, especially without a timing chain invoice in the history. This is also a good time to check the intake and oil pressure at the same appointment.
At the first rattle when cold
Prompt diagnostics: a rattling chain can jump a tooth. Limit journeys until the appointment.
At loss of power or a warning light
A clogged intake is the most common cause on a diesel used mainly in town, but a timing fault must be ruled out.
Every 10,000 km
Oil change at least every 10,000 km: the best protection for chain, tensioners and bearings, far more effective than the long intervals originally indicated.

Is the N47 engine reliable?
The N47 is an economical, torquey engine, but its timing chain is its known weak point. With good servicing (frequent oil changes, timing system monitored after 100,000 km), it covers long distances.
Which cars have an N47 engine?
BMW 4-cylinder diesels from roughly 2007 to 2015: 1 Series (116d to 123d), 3 Series (316d to 320d), 5 Series 520d, X1 18d to 23d, X3 20d, and MINI Cooper D and SD from the same period.
N47 timing chain: what does replacement cost?
The complete chain kit fitted to an N47 costs from €2,100 incl. VAT with rear-wheel drive and from €2,500 incl. VAT with xDrive, including parts and labour.
What are the symptoms of an N47 chain problem?
Metallic rattling for a few seconds on a cold start, whistling at idle, a crankshaft / camshaft timing fault or plastic residue at an oil change.
Should I avoid a used BMW with an N47 engine?
Not necessarily. An N47 with its timing system already replaced and regular oil changes documented by invoices remains a good choice. Without history, have an engine assessment before buying and budget for a chain kit.
What mileage can an N47 engine reach?
There is no fixed limit: it all depends on servicing. An N47 with regular oil changes and its timing system replaced in time goes well beyond the mileages at which chain problems appear.
What is the difference between the N47 and B47?
The B47 replaces the N47 from 2014–2015 on the same models. It is a new generation of 4-cylinder diesel; timing system, bearings and intake need the same monitoring as mileage rises.
