Signs of wear

When bearings wear

Our Ostwald workshop checks their condition on BMW engines under the greatest stress and replaces them to manufacturer procedures. Excessive bearing wear can have very serious consequences for the engine. Certain signs should prompt concern.

  1. Loss of oil pressure

    Internal engine lubrication becomes insufficient.

  2. Crankshaft wear

    The crankshaft journals deteriorate rapidly.

  3. Metal particles at an oil change

Visible metal particles in the oil indicate advanced internal wear.

  4. Spun bearing

The most serious case: the engine is often beyond repair and must be replaced or rebuilt.

Our work

From diagnostics to replacement

Bearing wear can also have another cause: oil pump, pressure regulation, faulty injectors, poor combustion or oil dilution. Diagnostics look for the cause, as well as the symptom.

  1. Complete engine diagnostics

Reading faults, checking parameters and listening to the engine.

  2. Oil analysis

Oil appearance and presence of metal particles.

  3. Pressure measurements

Oil pressure, to assess the pump and crankshaft bearings.

  4. Replacement to BMW procedures

If required, bearing replacement to manufacturer procedures, following a quote.

Engines to monitor

Turbocharged BMW engines develop high torque under heavy loads: some deserve particular attention.

Diesel: wear mainly affects the crankshaft main bearings. Petrol: mainly big-end bearings, especially on turbocharged or sports engines.

BMW rod bearing replacement: An often underestimated problem

Many owners monitor the timing chain, although bearing condition and engine lubrication are just as important, sometimes more so. High temperatures, mechanical stresses, high torque and overly long oil change intervals accelerate internal wear.

A BMW serviced with oil changes every 20,000 to 30,000 km calls for particular vigilance: degraded oil gradually loses its lubricating and protective properties. That is why the workshop recommends an oil change at least every 10,000 km.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions, our answers

Another question? Call the workshop on +33 9 88 04 88 11.

What are the symptoms of worn big-end bearings?

Loss of oil pressure, visible metal particles at an oil change and rapid crankshaft wear. A spun bearing is the most serious case: the engine very often needs replacing or rebuilding.

How much does bearing replacement cost?

Replacement is quoted following engine diagnostics costing from €120 incl. VAT, which confirm wear and look for its cause.

How often should the oil be changed to protect the bearings?

We recommend an oil change at least every 10,000 km, ideally every 7,000 km on BMW M engines. Degraded oil offers less protection to internal components.

Can bearing failure be repaired?

Unlike some timing chain failures, an engine with a spun bearing very often needs replacing or rebuilding, which is costly: preventive monitoring is therefore worthwhile.
