BMW Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap

BMW Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap in Strasbourg: mapping alone or modified parts, differences and mandatory diagnostics before tuning at our Ostwald workshop.

BMW Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap: on your car, the question arises as soon as remapping is discussed. The short answer is one sentence: Stage 1 changes only engine mapping; Stage 2 combines modified parts with adapted mapping. The right choice therefore depends less on the hoped-for gain than on your car’s condition, what has already been modified and how you use it. Here is what distinguishes the two levels and what our Ostwald workshop checks before discussing them.

Stage 1: mapping alone

Stage 1 is an engine control unit remap without changing parts. Parameters managing injection, boost pressure and ignition are adjusted, staying within the manufacturer’s safety margins.

On a turbocharged engine, as fitted to most recent BMW and MINI models, petrol and diesel alike, torque generally increases most noticeably: the car accelerates more strongly, especially in the mid-range used in everyday driving.

Who is it for?

  • a standard car in good condition, without mechanical modifications;
  • road use, in town and on motorways, where flexibility and in-gear acceleration are wanted;
  • an owner who wants to keep a way back: if you sell the car, the workshop restores its original configuration free of charge.

Stage 2: mapping for modified parts

Stage 2 is not a ‘stronger Stage 1’. It requires a modified mechanical configuration and a remap written for that specific configuration. Depending on engine and project, changes involve:

  • the intake: a more effective intercooler, hybrid turbos;
  • the exhaust: downpipe or complete system;
  • the engine itself and, if needed, chassis or gearbox parameters.

What else Stage 2 requires

More torque also means more stress on everything transmitting and handling power: clutch or automatic gearbox, drivetrain, brakes, cooling. A Stage 2 project should therefore be prepared with the condition of these components in mind, as well as a power figure.

Some intake or exhaust parts can also affect vehicle approval and its French roadworthiness test. This needs considering before buying the parts, rather than afterwards.

Gains: why there is no single figure

Two BMW models with the same stated power do not necessarily respond to a remap in the same way. The result depends on the engine and version, mileage, servicing and existing modifications. A promise of the same gain for every engine therefore deserves scrutiny.

To give you an idea, the gains calculator on our remapping page gives an indicative Stage 1 and Stage 2 estimate for each engine: average gains observed on a standard vehicle in good condition. Your car’s result is confirmed after workshop diagnostics, according to its condition and configuration.

Diagnostics first

At Askwert Motors, every remap starts with mandatory diagnostics: reading faults and checking engine condition. Remapping is only carried out on mechanically sound vehicles; on a worn engine, it accelerates wear rather than improving driving enjoyment.

These diagnostics also identify a remap already carried out elsewhere. When previous tuning is poor, the workshop analyses the changes and corrects errors before any new tuning.

What about the automatic gearbox?

On a BMW with an automatic gearbox, the engine is only part of the equation. The gearbox also manages the torque it accepts and the way it changes gear. A gearbox remap can accompany Stage 1 or Stage 2: optimised D and Sport modes, responsiveness and a torque limiter adapted to the new mapping.

High engine torque is also a reason to bring forward the automatic gearbox oil change: oil in good condition maintains the hydraulic pressure the gearbox needs for clean shifts more effectively.

BMW Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap: how to choose

  • Your BMW is standard and you want greater flexibility: Stage 1 generally meets the need without mechanical changes.
  • You have already modified the intake or exhaust, or plan to do so: this is a Stage 2 project, developed with the workshop from the actual configuration.
  • You are unsure: start with diagnostics. They establish whether the mechanical components can cope and what is needed before going further.

Sports options (pop & bang, launch control, map-switch, start-stop deactivation…) are activated on request alongside the remap. Whichever level you choose, remapping changes the car’s characteristics: remember to inform your insurer.

Prices and appointments in Strasbourg

A remap’s price depends on your engine’s original power output; the bands are displayed incl. VAT on the BMW ECU remap page. The workshop is in Ostwald, on the outskirts of Strasbourg, and works exclusively on BMW and MINI.

To prepare your project, state your model, engine and existing modifications in the contact form to arrange diagnostics.

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2 on a BMW?

Stage 1 changes only engine mapping, without changing parts. Stage 2 combines mechanical modifications (intake, exhaust or engine) with a remap written for this new configuration.

Can I move from Stage 1 to Stage 2 later?

Yes, provided you fit the parts required for Stage 2: the mapping is then adapted to the new configuration, following workshop diagnostics, mandatory before any remap.

Can the original configuration be restored?

Yes: if you sell the car, the workshop restores its original configuration free of charge.

How much does a remap at Askwert Motors cost?

The price depends on the engine's original power output: from €360 incl. VAT below 199 PS, from €420 incl. VAT from 200 to 260 PS and from €480 incl. VAT above 261 PS.
